The importance of Vitamin D

Nature's miracle vitamin

By Tom Ryan

Vitamin D is one of the most important components of a healthy lifestyle.  More and more studies are showing the benefits of ensuring that proper levels of Vitamin D are maintained within our bodies.  Some of the high level benefits of proper vitamin D intake are; improved symptoms of depression and improved immunity relative to colds. There is also some evidence reported that vitamin D can have a protective effect in the body with respect to certain cancers.

Vitamin D has multiple roles in the body, helping to:

  • Maintain the health of bones and teeth
  • Support the health of the immune system, brain and nervous system
  • Regulate insulin levels and aid diabetes management
  • Support lung function and cardiovascular health
  • Influence the expression of genes involved in cancer development.

Luckily, Vitamin D can be produced by the body with mild sun exposure or it can be consumed in food. However, this can be problematic and hard to achieve during the long days of winter. (in certain geographies, if you want to lay in the snow)  The most effective way to get optimal intake of vitamin D is thru proper supplementation. (Technically Vitamin D3) Particularly if one is on a restricted calorie diet or is exercising often.

Unfortunately, our skin can become damaged from too much exposure to the sun's harmful rays. Using the proper sun-screen SPF protects us against skin damage and accelerated aging.

Adequate vitamin D intake is important for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption, maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, and has been linked to a protective effect against multiple diseases such as cancer, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

So, we must rely on supplementation or diet to properly meet our bodies demands for this important nutrient.

Additionally, Vitamin D has many protective roles throughout the body including its protection of the skeletal system, and its role in helping to decrease the risk of several autoimmune diseases. Based on the above factors, there are many compelling reasons why it is important to maintain vitamin D sufficiency all year round.

Vitamin D can be acquired thru a diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids or other fortified foods.

Fatty fish can be a good source of vitamin D. Common options include salmon, trout, mackerel, tuna, and eel. Also, fortified foods such as orange juice, milk and other dairy foods (egg yolks) contain vitamin D.  Basically your best bet for optimal levels is a good high quality vitamin D supplement taken daily.  Such as Integrative Vitamin D at Midwest Weight Control.

As you continue on your journey to improve your health and combat the effects of aging, remember some of the important keys:

  • Proper Diet (Low Glycemic Eating)
  • Proper Supplementation (containing vitamin D3)
  • Exercise (anything that floats your boat)
  • Essential Rest and recuperation (adequate restful sleep)

Here's to a healthy future!

Before I came to Midwest Weight Control, I couldn’t lose weight. I’d tried everything from fad diets to different weight loss programs. I finally met with the staff at MWC and found out that I had certain medical issues that were standing in the way of my weight loss. The Medical Director addressed these issues with me, and I began to lose weight steadily. Since then, I’ve lost 61 pounds and I have adopted a new healthy and active lifestyle. I have never felt better in my life!

- Janice

After nearly forty years of yo-yo dieting, and believing I could not diet one more time, I decided to take a drastic step. I went through the testing for gastric bypass surgery, and was denied. Bitterly disappointed, I expressed my feelings to the dietitian from the bypass program. She suggested another option: Midwest Weight Control.

What a great program it is! Not only have I lost weight, but I’ve finally made the shift in my thinking about a lifetime commitment to fitness. I look and feel better, and have lost my self-consciousness about my weight. It will no longer be a barrier or an excuse for not doing what I want to in life.
